Culture Isn’t Complicated: It’s All About Behaviour

Have you ever wondered how an organisation's culture develops?
It's not as complicated as you might think.
In fact, it's not complicated at all.
Your organisation's culture is determined by behaviour.
Whatever behaviour is most often exhibited - without consequences - is perceived by others to be acceptable.
Whatever is perceived to be acceptable is then copied. We're social creatures, constantly trying to fit in and be part of the group and, therefore, people embody and emulate behaviour they see; even if it feels a little 'off'.
Emulated behaviour creates a critical mass which defines 'normal' behaviour and that, in turn, defines your organisation's culture.
We humans want to fit in, and many of us are reluctantly willing (that's a deliberate oxymoron!) to turn ourselves into a pretzel if it means we'll be part of the group.
Knowing this gives you the information you need to change your organisation's culture.
Start by changing behaviour.
Define the culture you want to create, and the behaviours that will get you there.
Exhibit them.
Coach to them.
Reward and recognise them.
Hire to them.
And watch the magic happen.
